SASSY'S REVIEW

❖

The Mindf*ck Series by S.T. Abby is one of those stories that makes you question your own morality. We have Lana Myers, a woman who’s spent years planning revenge against the people who destroyed her life, and Logan Bennett, an FBI profiler who happens to be investigating her murders. Somewhere along the way, these two fall in love, and suddenly I found myself rooting for the serial killer instead of the man trying to catch her. The more I learned about Lana and what she’d been through, the harder it became to judge her for what she was doing.

I went into this series expecting a dark romance with plenty of suspense, but I wasn’t prepared for how invested I’d become in Lana’s story. There’s so much more happening here than a woman getting revenge. It’s also about trauma, survival, corruption, and what happens when the people who are supposed to protect you are the very ones who fail you. Some parts were genuinely difficult to read, but understanding what Lana had been through made her story that much more compelling.

Lana was easily my favorite character. She’s intelligent, resourceful, determined, and has spent years preparing for what she’s about to do. I loved that she wasn’t written as someone who needed rescuing or suddenly changed her entire life because she fell in love. She knew what she wanted, and she wasn’t about to let anything interfere with her plans. But what I appreciated most was that beneath all that determination, she was still someone dealing with an unimaginable amount of pain. She could be ruthless one moment and vulnerable the next, and those different sides of her made her feel like a much more developed character.

What made Lana’s story so interesting was watching her struggle with wanting revenge while slowly realizing there might still be a future worth living for. Falling in love with Logan gave her something she hadn’t expected, but it didn’t magically erase her past or everything she’d spent years working toward. I appreciated that because healing isn’t that simple, and I wouldn’t have believed her character if she’d suddenly forgotten everything the moment a handsome FBI agent came along.

And speaking of Logan, I really liked him, although there were definitely moments when I questioned his judgment. He’s intelligent, compassionate, and genuinely believes in helping people. I loved how patient and considerate he was with Lana, especially when it came to her emotional boundaries. He wasn’t constantly pushing her to talk about things she wasn’t ready to share, and I appreciated that softer side of him. However, for an experienced FBI profiler, he overlooked some things that seemed a little too obvious. I understand that feelings can cloud your judgment, but there were times when I wondered how he wasn’t putting certain pieces together.

I enjoyed Lana and Logan’s relationship, especially because I knew something Logan didn’t. Watching him investigate the very woman he was falling in love with added so much tension to their romance. Their chemistry was good, and I liked that their feelings developed alongside everything else happening in the story. Lana had spent so much of her life focused on revenge that having someone genuinely care about her gave her something else to consider. At the same time, Logan’s entire career was built around bringing people like her to justice, and I kept wondering how he would handle the truth if he ever discovered it.

Jake was another character I really liked. His loyalty to Lana and their shared history gave their friendship a lot of meaning. He understood what she’d been through in ways Logan couldn’t, and I appreciated that their relationship remained important even as her romance developed. I also enjoyed Hadley, particularly because she was observant and willing to question things when they didn’t add up. The supporting characters added a lot to the story, although I occasionally questioned some of the decisions made during the investigation.

The revenge storyline was what really kept me turning the pages. I liked how S.T. Abby gradually revealed Lana’s past and how everything was connected. The more I learned about what happened, the more I understood why Lana was so determined to finish what she’d started. I also appreciated how the story made me think about the difference between justice and revenge. Lana’s actions were brutal, and I certainly wouldn’t condone them in real life, but knowing how completely the system had failed her made it difficult not to sympathize with her. I found myself wanting the people responsible to be held accountable, even when I didn’t necessarily agree with her methods.

I thought the pacing was one of the series’ strongest points. Each book picked up where the previous one left off, and the alternating perspectives between Lana and Logan made everything even more interesting. Since I already knew who the killer was, the suspense came from wondering how long Lana could keep her secret and how close Logan would get to uncovering the truth. The cliffhangers certainly didn’t help my ability to put the books down, and reading all five together made the story feel like one continuous thriller.

I did have a few issues with how easily some things worked out, though. Lana and Jake were incredibly prepared, but there were moments when their plans seemed almost too perfect. Certain technological details and investigative procedures also required a little suspension of disbelief. I don’t expect every fictional crime thriller to be completely realistic, but considering Logan and his team were experienced investigators, I would have liked to see a few more obstacles and unexpected complications. I think that would have made the suspense even stronger.

The darker subject matter was another important part of the story. This series deals with sexual violence, abuse, torture, murder, and severe psychological trauma, and some of it is genuinely disturbing. I would absolutely recommend checking the content warnings before reading. However, I appreciated that Lana’s past wasn’t treated as something that could simply be forgotten. What happened to her influenced her relationships, her choices, and the person she’d become. It also gave the revenge storyline an emotional weight that went beyond simply watching her hunt down the people responsible.

As for the spice, Lana and Logan definitely had chemistry, and there were some explicit intimate scenes, but I wouldn’t consider this a particularly spicy series. The romance was important, but the revenge and suspense remained the main focus, which worked well for me. I’d give it around three out of five peppers. I also enjoyed S.T. Abby’s writing style, particularly Lana’s internal thoughts and the occasional humor that helped balance some of the darker moments.

I was especially interested in how both Lana and Logan changed as the story progressed. Lana had spent years living for revenge, and I liked watching her begin to consider what her life might look like afterward. Logan, on the other hand, was forced to confront situations that challenged his beliefs about justice and the system he’d dedicated his career to serving. I appreciated the direction their characters took, although I would have liked more time spent exploring some of Logan’s emotional struggles and decisions.

By the time I reached the final book, I was completely invested in how everything would come together. I appreciated that the ending addressed the larger revenge storyline instead of focusing entirely on the romance. However, I did feel that some developments happened a little too conveniently, and I wanted more time with the characters afterward. Considering everything they’d been through, I think a little more attention to the emotional aftermath would have made the ending even more satisfying.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Mindf*ck Series. Lana was a fascinating character, and I loved how the author managed to make me sympathize with someone whose actions were so morally questionable. The suspense kept me interested, the romance added another layer to the story, and the gradual revelations surrounding Lana’s past made it difficult to stop reading. My biggest complaints were the occasional lack of realism in the investigation and wanting a little more development around certain emotional moments, especially toward the end. Neither ruined my enjoyment, but they were enough to keep it from being a full five-star read.

Would I recommend The Mindf*ck Series? Absolutely, but please check the content warnings first. If you enjoy dark psychological thrillers, revenge stories, morally gray heroines, serial killer suspense, complicated romances, strong female characters, and plenty of twists, this series is worth adding to your TBR. Just be prepared for some extremely disturbing subject matter.

My Final Verdict: The Mindf*ck Series was a dark, emotional, and suspenseful read that kept me invested from beginning to end. I loved Lana’s character, the complicated relationship between her and Logan, and how the revenge storyline unfolded. The pacing and suspense were excellent, and while I would have liked a little more realism in certain parts of the investigation and more time spent on the emotional aftermath, I genuinely enjoyed the series. It’s one I’d recommend to readers who appreciate morally complicated characters and stories that aren’t afraid to explore some very dark subjects.
