SASSY'S REVIEW
❖The Vampire’s Servant: Part 1 by Rory McCauley-Hayman was a really good read for me. There’s quite a bit going on in this story, from vampires, werewolves, and supernatural politics to complicated relationships, ancient secrets, and a young woman trying to find her place in a world that’s completely different from the one she’s always known. What I enjoyed most was getting to know the characters and watching their relationships develop as more of the supernatural world began to unfold.
Echo is an interesting character, and I think readers may have very different opinions about her depending on the kind of heroine they usually enjoy. She’s endured more than anyone should have to, yet she’s managed to hold on to her kindness and her desire to care for others. She’s gentle, affectionate, trusting, and naturally nurturing. She wants to make the people she loves happy, and she genuinely enjoys taking care of them. At the same time, she’s insecure, often questions herself, and needs reassurance that she’s loved and wanted. Considering everything she’s experienced, I found those parts of her personality understandable.
Victor and Grayson bring two very different personalities into Echo’s life, and I enjoyed seeing how their relationships developed. Victor has that protective, sometimes controlling nature you might expect from an ancient vampire, but there’s also a more affectionate and caring side to him when it comes to Echo. Grayson has his own protective instincts, along with the challenges that come with being a werewolf. Neither man is without his faults, and their differences make the relationship dynamics more interesting. I also appreciated seeing how Victor and Grayson gradually learned to understand each other rather than focusing entirely on their individual relationships with Echo.
The supernatural world is another part of the story I enjoyed. There’s much more happening beyond the romance, including vampire and werewolf politics, different supernatural beings, family connections, and mysteries surrounding the past. I liked how the story gradually introduced these elements and showed how they connected to the characters. There’s plenty to explore, and I’m interested in seeing where Rory takes everything as the series continues.
The romance is a significant part of the book, and the relationships between Echo, Victor, and Grayson receive a lot of attention. I enjoyed the affection, protectiveness, and the way they worked toward understanding what each person needed. Their relationship isn’t entirely conventional, but I liked that the story allowed them to figure things out together. There’s also plenty of spice, so readers who enjoy a more intimate paranormal romance will certainly find that here.
I think part of what kept this from being a full five-star read for me may have been wanting to see a little more personal growth from Echo, although I’m not entirely sure that’s fair to her character. Echo isn’t your typical strong-willed, outspoken heroine, and I don’t think she’s supposed to be. She’s gentle, affectionate, trusting, and someone who genuinely finds happiness in taking care of the people she loves. After everything she’s been through, she still has this incredibly sweet and nurturing personality, even if she sometimes struggles with her own confidence and needs reassurance that she’s loved and wanted.
I would have liked to see her become a little more confident in herself and her own decisions, but I also realize that changing too much about her personality would take away from what makes Echo who she is. Not every heroine needs to become a badass who takes on the world. Sometimes strength comes from remaining kind and loving despite everything life has thrown at you, and I think Echo is a good example of that. So while I can’t quite explain what was missing for me, I also wouldn’t want her to lose the qualities that make her character unique.
Final Verdict:
Overall, I really enjoyed The Vampire’s Servant: Part 1. The characters, their developing relationships, and the supernatural world Rory has created gave me plenty to enjoy. I particularly liked the differences between Victor and Grayson and the way Echo’s personality brought out different sides of both men. There’s a lot of story here, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the characters and the larger mysteries continue to develop.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. If you enjoy paranormal romance with vampires, werewolves, protective love interests, unconventional relationships, supernatural politics, and plenty of spice, this one is worth checking out. Just be mindful that the story explores some difficult subjects involving abuse and trauma.
